As Moore's law reaches its limits, quantum computers hold the promise of solving types of problems far beyond the capability of existing computers. For this to happen, quantum computers leverage quantum mechanical effects, most specifically superposition, to achieve massive computational parallelism. Major areas that are expected to be revolutionized by quantum computation are chemistry and materials science, security and cryptography, artificial intelligence and financial services. In this talk, an overview of the fundamentals of quantum computation, existing and future quantum hardware technologies, and example quantum algorithms will be presented.
