Dr. Ibnkahla obtained an Engineering degree in Electronics in 1992, an M.Sc. degree in signal and image processing in 1992 (First Class Honors, first award of Toulouse universities), a Ph.D. degree in signal processing in 1996 (First Class Honors), and a HDR (The ability to lead and supervise research) Degree in digital communications and signal processing in 1998, all from the National Polytechnic Institute of Toulouse (INP), Toulouse, France.
Dr. Ibnkahla is currently an Associate Professor (tenure) in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Queen’s University, Kingston, Canada. He has been an Assistant Professor at Queen's University (2000-2003) and at INP (1996-1999).
From 1996 to 1999, Dr. Ibnkahla was the Technical Manager of the European Union ACTS – NEWTEST program which included 7 industrial and academic partners from France, Germany, Sweden and the UK. He was also responsible for several projects with the French Space Agency (1994-1999) and the European space agency (1999). He is currently leading projects with the Canadian Space Agency and the Canadian Institute for Telecommunications Research, the Ontario Ministry of Energy, Science and Technology, the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), Communications Information Technology Ontario (CITO) and ALTERA Corporation (San Jose, California).
Dr. Ibnkahla is the Editor of the Signal Processing for Mobile Communications Handbook, CRC Press, July 2004. He has published 22 international journal papers and book chapters, 20 technical reports, and more than 50 conference papers. These publications include a significant number of invited papers. He has supervised 3 post doctoral fellows and more than 20 graduate students. His publications include a paper in the prestigious journal, The Proceedings of The IEEE, and a book chapter at the best seller, The Electrical Engineering Handbook, CRC Press.
His research interests include signal processing, wireless communications, satellite communications, adaptive systems and neural networks.
Dr. Ibnkahla received the INPT Leopold Escande Medal for the year 1997, France, for his research contributions to signal processing; the prestigious Prime Minister's Research Excellence Award (PREA) in 2000, for his contributions in wireless mobile communications; and the Favorite Professor Award, Queen's University, in 2004, for his outstanding effort and enthusiasm in undergraduate teaching. He is a Professional Engineer of the province of Ontario, Canada.
