Workshop Title:

Video Networking

Presenter(s):

Professor Mohammad Ghanbari

Affiliations:

University of Essex, United Kingdom

Overview:

Today the information Technology (IT) faces a heterogeneous media of speech, data and images of various kinds, along with a heterogeneous network of IP, ATM, Mobile, etc. Though currently the main services in these networks are data and to some extent speech, but soon the network bandwidth will be swamped by the video services. In this tutorial we will be looking at the problems of transmission of video services over these networks, where provision of bandwidth may not always be feasible nor due to their sensitivity to errors, they may face larger errors.

Contents:

  1. Video coding for IP , Broadcast and Mobile Networks
  2. Characteristics of various networks
  3. Error resilient coding
  4. Interfacing video to networks
  5. Video transcoding and congestion control
  6. Loss concealment
  7. Hierarchical modulation for video over mobile networks

Place and Date:

Faculty of Engineering, Shiraz University, Shiraz, Iran, Friday Sept. 9, 2005.

Audience:

Multimedia network researchers, Network Operators, Network managers

Teacher’s Biography:

Mohammad Ghanbari is the professor of Video Networking at the Department of Electronic Systems Engineering, University of Essex, United Kingdom. He is best known for the pioneering work on layered video coding that earned him the IEEE Fellowship. His main research interest is video compression and transmission of video over networks, the so called video networking. He has published more than 110 journal papers and 200 conference papers and 11 international Patents, on various aspects of video networking. He has authored three books on video and networks, and his book on Video Coding: Introduction to standard codecs , was awarded the Rayleigh prize for the best book of the year 2000 by IEE.

Professor Ghanbari has been Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Multimedia from 1998-2004, Guest editor to various Journals, and since 1998 has been on the editorial advisor board of Image Communication Journal. He is a CEng, FIEE and FIEEE.
