Tutorial Title:

Research Management as An Essential Means for Creating Knowledge in Research Environments

Presenter(s):

Kambiz Badie & Maryam Tayefeh Mahmoudi

Affiliations:

Director of IT Research Faculty, Iran Telecom Research Center &  Researcher and Administrator in e-Organization Project at IT Applications Research Group, IT Research Faculty, Iran Telecom Research Center

Overview:

Research Management (RM) has recently been proposed as an efficient tool for optimizing the capabilities of research teams with respect to their research & development projects. This is mainly because the complexity and diversity of the research projects have tremendously increased, to the extent that manipulating them in the absence of meta-level viewpoints in research activities may lead to excessive costs in research organizations. It is exactly due to this reason that, a meta-level management of the essential concepts in a research domain, should somehow be considered to organize the related topics in a meaningful way.

In this way, one can claim that some sort of knowledge would eventually be created, which can highly serve expanding and integrating the results of similar (or relevant) research activities for a wide range of applications.

Contents:

Taking the above points into account, the organization of the workshop would be as follows:

  1. A Brief Introduction to the Necessity of RM
  2. A Flow Diagram for RM Activities from Knowledge Creation Viewpoint
  3. Role of Literature Survey & Purpose-Oriented Processing in RM
  4.   Role of Project Formulation in RM
  5. Comparative Analysis & Modeling to Assure Creation of Knowledge
  6. Role of Constraint Checking in Integration
  7. Some Examples in the Domain of ICT
  8. Conclusions & Discussion

Place and Date:

Faculty of Engineering, Shiraz University, Shiraz, Iran, Friday, 9 September 2005.

Audience:

The workshop is suggested to those involved in engineering research activities in general, and ICT researches in particular.
