One of the most charming intra-city caravansaries of the Safavid era is the caravansary built during the rule of Shah Sultan Hossein (1694-1723 A.C), the last Safavid king. It was built by the order of Shah's mother on the side of Chaharbagh Avenue (having four lines of trees). Chaharbagh is considered as one of the most exquisite and gorgeous civic avenues of the world.
This caravansary was a type of hotel, established amongst the complex of royal buildings and gardens, the revenue of which was spent on its adjacent then newly-built university, Madrassa of Chaharbagh. By the centuries, the beautiful complex became hardly ruined due to neglect. In 1958, the Iran Insurance Joint Stock Company volunteered to rennovate the area and the old caravansary was transformed into a modern 5-star hotel. The modern Abbasi Hotel was destined to represent the genuine art of Isfahan. A team of craftsmen skilled in traditional arts spent about 670 000 hours to rebuild and ornament the hotel's new sections, rendering them a vivid and precious complex of artworks of old and modern Isfahan. The present complex comprises an alluring court built to the style of Iranian gardens, 227 rooms, suites and apartments, multi-purpose halls with different capacities for all types of meetings and banquets, luxurious restaurants, coffee shops, swimming pools and sauna, Qur'an museum, traditional tea house and all regular high class services. |
