Video Streaming over IP

Nowadays, video streaming over Internet is not anymore an unreachable utopia. Video On Demand (VoD), should emerge in short or mid term, with the availability of high bandwidth access medium (ADSL or cable) in the final customer premises. We will review the in this one-day tutorial, the technological challenge which should be answered by the Internet community to make possible the availability of this new service.

This tutorial will deal with a lot of different domains. The tutorial will contain the following chapters:

  • A state of the art in video compression and MPEG4 and MPEG2 standard will be reminded. The application of joint source/channel coding to Internet multimedia transmission will be described
  • Heterogeneity concern will be addressed and multi layer mechanisms will be introduced. The mixing of these approaches with unequal error protection and priority transmission will be described next.
  • On the transport side, we will introduce RTP/RTCP protocol that is actually the underlying transmission mechanism for multimedia streaming.
  • Fast description of QoS providing architecture in Internet (RSVP, DiffServ). Multicast and its deployment in the actual Internet will be also described.
  • Architecture for Video streaming over IP applications. Video cache and Content Distribution Network (CDN) problematic.
